Yellow Snow White--greenware, but more complete

This one turned out to have such a nice, devious expression...unfortunately, the fired piece looks much too benign. I'm planning to see if I can fix it up with oil paint, but it really brings home the point that every sculptor that I know prefers his or her work in the raw. There's something much more alive with wet, raw clay than with a fired object. Glaze is like makeup--it covers and colors, but it doesn't have the same power as greenware.

She's pretty much finished with the sculpt and I hollowed her out before applying the crazy delicate hair. Now she'll need to dry--and I'll have to figure out how to finish her. That's always my least favorite part. Glazes and stains do unexpected things and can take a lovely piece to a really horrible piece in nothing flat. On the other hand, I've seen some not fantastic sculptures that turn out beautiful because they've been finished so nicely.

I'm open to finishing suggestions . . . .

"The Skeptic" or "What about the farewell drugs?!" by astrid fingerhut

So, she's based on me (since I was the only one around to model), but I think she looks sort of like a combination of me and Chloe Webb playing Nancy Spungen in Sid and Nancy.

If you haven't seen Sid and Nancy, it's pretty fabulous. Gary Oldman is perfect as the lost and kind of clueless Sid Vicious and Chloe makes Nauseating Nancy so disgusting and alien and heartbreaking that it's hard to stop watching her. She's amazing.

One thing she is not, though, is pretty. Sigh.

New piece, started today. I am shooting for skeptical, but it's looking more fearful at this point. Hope to work on it tomorrow and will have more pics.

The Skeptic--about five hours in.

I love how crazy/desperate she looks--and that her eyes appear to be looking at that sandwich you're holding. Or maybe assessing what the chances are of keeping your body fresh enough to eat over some extended period of time if she kept you far away from the kiln room.

She didn't make it through firing.
